Exploring Gender: Gender-Neutral Preschool

Can you imagine a gender-neutral environment? Society dictates so completely our conception of gender that it is difficult to think of a place where one pronoun fits all or a child can choose to play with a toy without being placed into the stereotype associated with that toy. It is nearly impossible, and yet, a preschool in Sweden is trying to create such an environment.

Exploring Gender: Equal Protections News

Vandy Beth Glenn was a legislative editor for the Georgia state legislature prior to telling her supervisors about her intent to transition from male to female, at which point she was fired. Unfortunately, as so many other transgender and genderqueer individuals can attest, this treatment is far too common. Federal law does not explicitly designate gender identity as a protected status in employment and hiring, leading many to depend on the forward-thinking of some companies or those few states with laws in place on the state level to prevent this kind of discrimination. But thanks to Glenn and her determination to pursue the case, a new precedent has been set, at least in the district covered by the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

Sappho Was One of Nine Greek Lyric Poets -Who Were the Others?

Dear Sappho,
I know that Sappho was an Ancient Greek poet from the island of Lesbos. She was one of a canon of nine Greek lyric poets. Lyric poetry is a form of poetry that expresses personal and emotional feelings. In the ancient world, lyric poems were played to the lyre. Today Lyric poems don't have to rhyme or need to be set to music. Most of her poetry, which was well known and greatly admired throughout antiquity, has been lost, or destroyed. What I don't know is the other lyric poets in the cannon.

Exploring Gender: The Interview

I had a job interview today, the first one in about a year. And though I now go by Cael on a day to day basis, I have still not changed my name legally, so I still must legally apply as Mary. In the course of past interviews, it has always been difficult to try to figure out how to dress as my life has progressed. At first, it was easy—though uncomfortable—to put on some tight pin stripe pants and a spaghetti-string tank top under an equally tight button up shirt. Then as I grew more comfortable with myself, I would trade the tight pants for some men’s slacks instead. Little by little, my style changed to reflect my male identity, and I no longer own any women’s clothes.

I find it fascinating that a single word can mean so many things, yet each word means something only because we give it that significance. My personal definition for pretty could actually be ugly or some other antithesis, but what gives words their power is the meaning we all, as a united English-speaking (or any other language) entity, entrust to them.
