Exploring Gender: Gender-Neutral Preschool
Can you imagine a gender-neutral environment? Society dictates so completely our conception of gender that it is difficult to think of a place where one pronoun fits all or a child can choose to play with a toy without being placed into the stereotype associated with that toy. It is nearly impossible, and yet, a preschool in Sweden is trying to create such an environment.

Exploring Gender: Equal Protections News
Vandy Beth Glenn was a legislative editor for the Georgia state legislature prior to telling her supervisors about her intent to transition from male to female, at which point she was fired. Unfortunately, as so many other transgender and genderqueer individuals can attest, this treatment is far too common. Federal law does not explicitly designate gender identity as a protected status in employment and hiring, leading many to depend on the forward-thinking of some companies or those few states with laws in place on the state level to prevent this kind of discrimination. But thanks to Glenn and her determination to pursue the case, a new precedent has been set, at least in the district covered by the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

Exploring Gender: Pronouns and Name Changes
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about pronouns and my name change. I understand it is hard at first to change those things in your mind when I’ve spent my whole life being one person, and all of the sudden, I’m another. It’s confusing, and no matter how supportive you are, there will be slip-ups. How do people approach this change though?

Exploring Gender: The Question of (Trans)men at Women's Colleges
I am about to graduate from a women’s college in Virginia. I have always loved it here: the people, the community. Generally, I feel safe. I feel secure. I know I can walk around campus holding hands with my girlfriend and no one will care. But trans issues at a women’s college are complicated. Again, I know I am safe, but there are constraints to that safety.

A few years ago I stopped listening to the radio wearied to always hear the same songs every hour. I went to discover other musics, other artists, I read music magazines which write about artists that we never hear on the radio and I discovered incredible songs.
The discovery of a voice, of a melody, of a rhythm,… the simple but magic pleasure of the music.
This week, I stopped on an artist with a very particular musical sound, Lykke Li.

Jamaican Newspaper Published Exodus Anti-Gay Advert
Some weeks ago, I spoke about the decline of an anti-gay organization, Exodus International, and I concluded by saying that soon, one would surely hear about it again because it needs money so it has to act to try to find new sponsors. The organization seems to move towards anti-gay countries like Jamaica. That's why one can discover a whole page denouncing homosexuality on a jamaican newspaper, the Jamaican Sunday Express, titled What you should know about homosexuality.

Pandan Nordic Same-Sex Dance Competition Dec 30 - Dec 31, 2010 Copenhagen, Denmark
Same sex ballroom dancing is different from ordinary ballroom because the dancers are not bound by their sex.
Either gender can both lead or be led in the dance whichever the couple prefers. Having the freedom to choose whether to dance "lord" or "lady" or maybe even both empowering same sex couples to allow for role changing while the dance is underway.
Pandan's overall goal is to offer dance classes in an atmosphere of tolerance.

Exploring Gender: Transgender Children
When diagnosed with Gender Identity Disorder (GID) at a young age, parents are tasked with deciding the best way to help their child. The response of parents varies. Some parents refuse to accept their child, pushing certain beliefs and constraints on them to fall within the line of society. Some allow their child to go through counseling in hopes that it will help, and still others pursue hormonal treatments to help their child transition. There are as many approaches to this dilemma as there are parents facing it.

Requirements for Long Term Lesbian Relationships
Dear Sappho,
What do you think is the most important quality in a long-term lesbian relationship?
Love, sex, acceptance, mutual goals & visions and compatibly are very important but so is reliability, and trust. First I followed my heart then my head and now my gut. Lesbian relationships are different from straight relationships. I’m asking you as the High Priestess Lesbian, what is the best requirement for long-term happiness?

Back It Up
There are times where I find myself wishing a perfect stranger would come up to me and quote Ron Burgundy as a pick up line: because then I’d have found “the one.” And lucky for you, after reading this article, having somebody approach you with the line: “You have...an absolutely breathtaking hiney," will be so commonplace the popular movie quote may lose most of it’s funny. Not all…because let’s be honest…it’s Anchor Man…it can never lose it’s funny. Basically what I’m trying to say here is: people are going to want to be friend’s with your backside after you put these poses into practice

Sappho Was One of Nine Greek Lyric Poets -Who Were the Others?
Dear Sappho,
I know that Sappho was an Ancient Greek poet from the island of Lesbos. She was one of a canon of nine Greek lyric poets. Lyric poetry is a form of poetry that expresses personal and emotional feelings. In the ancient world, lyric poems were played to the lyre. Today Lyric poems don't have to rhyme or need to be set to music. Most of her poetry, which was well known and greatly admired throughout antiquity, has been lost, or destroyed. What I don't know is the other lyric poets in the cannon.

Swing them hips, gurl!
It’s one of those parts of a woman’s body that some want more of, less of, love, or hate. I happen to be a HUGE fan of hips. Mine and everyone else’s. Exploring Gender: The Interview
I had a job interview today, the first one in about a year. And though I now go by Cael on a day to day basis, I have still not changed my name legally, so I still must legally apply as Mary. In the course of past interviews, it has always been difficult to try to figure out how to dress as my life has progressed. At first, it was easy—though uncomfortable—to put on some tight pin stripe pants and a spaghetti-string tank top under an equally tight button up shirt. Then as I grew more comfortable with myself, I would trade the tight pants for some men’s slacks instead. Little by little, my style changed to reflect my male identity, and I no longer own any women’s clothes.

Do People Watch LGBT On TV?
In a first chapter, we had seen that, unfortunately, TV series having LGBT characters are in fall. Except for a few series like True Blood, our TV screens are not very lesbian and we are there watching programs, all straight. Homophobia Is a Disease
Dear Sappho,
Homophobia is rampant in modern day society, especially in the Bible Belt and Republican dominated states. It is probably the major cause of teen suicide and sanctioned by bullies as a natural cure for homosexuality. I found you on Twitter and even though there are thousands of gay activists on Twitter I find homophobia exists there as well. What do you suspect is the major cause for homophobia and can it be cured. Did you deal with homophobia in your time on Lesbos and if so, how?

Generation L: The New Lesbian Reality Tv Series
Generation L is the new series which has just started on the web. In the form of reality TV, we discover a group of friends during the Mardi Gras of Sydney.
It is currently kind of fashion to make a lesbian reality tv series, after Ilene Chaiken and its pitiful The Real L Word, here is Generation L from Australia and fortunately, this one is much more interesting and promises good moments if it is developed.
The characteristic of Generation L is that there is neither scenario, nor fiction so we feel more reality in the way in which the history is showed. This is a group of friends (true friends) followed by a camera during the Gay Mardi Gras Parade of Sydney. This new series is described as being a show “which makes you come into the lives and the rooms of a new generation of lesbians”. Not so bad don't you think?

Exploring Gender: A Fluid Definition
Let’s just get this out there: I am an English nerd. I love grammar, poetry, literature, letters, words in general, and I spend most of my days, whether in class or elsewhere, thinking about the nature of words and communication. I find it fascinating that a single word can mean so many things, yet each word means something only because we give it that significance. My personal definition for pretty could actually be ugly or some other antithesis, but what gives words their power is the meaning we all, as a united English-speaking (or any other language) entity, entrust to them.

Breathe and Move the Holiday Stress Away!
It’s the holidays!
Duh…right? And if you look at the cover of any/every woman’s magazine it’s no different from any other month: all about toning your body, losing that flab FINALLY, and being the best/skinniest you that you can be!
What I say to that is:
Shut up.
Shut up.
Yoga, or any form of exercise: be it running, swimming, dancing, or getting it on, is always good for you. There are the obvious aesthetic reasons. But also, there are immeasurable physical and emotional benefits as well. And since it’s the holiday season: I’m pretty sure there’s some extra stress happening in your life that you’d like to get rid of.

Artists are of a rare breed. Although their numbers are far more greater than that of any nationality, each member of this prestigious clan is an entity of their own. Through my travels I have been privileged to meet many of its members and with each encounter I am taken aback. The thing about artists is that they not only march to a different beat but they create the drum that drives their existence. My favorite sect is The Writers. These people possess a gift that many aspire to have. The gift to tell a story that can inspire and create life.
